The Mechanical Engineering Department at Iowa State University has a world-class laboratory that provides facilities for experimentation to investigate the fundamental and feasibility concepts of laser advanced manufacturing, microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) and nanotechnology. The equipment available is listed under Laboratory Facilities. This equipment has been made possible through equipment grants from NSF, Iowa State University, and local industries. This state-of-the-art laboratory is ideally equipped for research in laser processing of materials, MEMS, and nanotechnology. Research is conducted in collaboration with many small business firms. Federal agencies such as National Science Foundation and Department of Defense support our research activities.
The laboratory is designed to serve both on- and off-campus users. On-campus users include researchers from mechanical engineering; physics; chemistry; materials science and engineering; biomedical engineering; electrical engineering; and Ames Laboratory, a research and development laboratory of the U.S. DOE that is located on the ISU campus.
