About AMISS

The Active Materials and Intelligent Structures and Systems Laboratory is directed by Dr. LeAnn Faidley in the Mechanical Engineering Department at Iowa State University. It was started in the Fall of 2006.

Research Goals

AMISS is engaged in the manufacture, characterization, modeling, control, and applicaton of a wide variety of active (or smart) materials. A primary focus is currently placed on magnetically activated materials.

Educational Goals

In addition to gaining expertise in an area of active materials students at all levels working in AMISS will:

  • Gain experimental, theoretical, and computational skills.
  • Be engaged in self-directed research under the guidance of Dr. LeAnn
  • Communicate their findings to the scientific community
  • Work in a cooperative, team based enviornment.
